OVERVIEW

VR Museum details about applicability of VR for different areas in the military. The user explores different stations that demonstrate a glimpse as to what and how VR can be useful for the military.

VR Museum

This project is an immersive spatial trade show, where navigating through portals takes the user to different locations representing the different uses of VR in military applications such as telepresence, field training, procedure training, mental health, and after action review.

DEIGN & DEVELOPMENT PROCESS

Statement of purpose: VR museum is a mobile VR application for learning the different uses of VR by exploring a museum environment, the user navigates through gazing and pressing the interactions button on the floor for movement and the user is able to travel through portals in the same manner. This allows the user to learn about the applications of VR by interacting with VR elements to reinforce the value and applications of VR within the military.

USER TESTING

Here we user test three focused parts: (1) the scene overall; (2) the interaction with the user; and (3) the user movement.

User Test: The Scene

What is the impressions you get from the scene?

  1. It was very exploratory.

User Test: Interaction

How easy is it to interact with the environment?

  1. Good, everything could be explored well.

User Test: Movement

What difficulties do you find moving through the environment?

  1. Motion worked well and smooth.
  2. The 360 aspect of the motion did made the user a bit dizzy at times (when moving too fast).

BREAK DOWN OF FINAL PIECE

VR Experience Start

Initial starting screen for VR museum:

VR Stations

The first station is about telepresence and how it can provide an immersive perspective in a room that would not be suitable for a person to be in due to extreme temperature, pressure, and environmental hazards.

The second station shows how on the field training can provide a rich training scenario, here we demonstrate a group of tanks and a drone flying by. This section was modified after the udacity review, and video of the Merkava Mk. 4 Barak currently using VR training by the Israeli Defense Force (IDF).

The third station shows how we can effectively train procedures on how to perform tasks, and we can experience the benefit of VR along with it by picking up a wrench and placing it in a determined spot.

The fourth station is about mental health (PTSD), by creating a relaxing setting and easing the mind into it we can provide an environment for a soldier to relax the mind.

The last station shows how VR can be used for after action review during missions and training exercises. This could also be applied to AR for battle space review.

CONCLUSION

The VR Museum enables a user to explore the possibilities available by bringing VR into military settings.

NEXT STEPS

The next step would be to refine the graphics for a more consistent look. The portals can be reused on other projects and it makes it interesting for transitioning between different locations.
